Fireplaces and their chimneys may reveal a great deal about historic houses; they can show how buildings were used and how they have changed and developed over time. They can also be some of the most striking and architecturally important elements of a house, because new technologies and, more often, the dictates of changing tastes, were reflected in radical changes to fire surrounds. However, the stylistic development of fireplaces has been well described elsewhere. This article focuses on the development of fire provision in domestic houses and details how evidence of earlier examples may survive in the archaeological record. The earliest hearths retained the fire in a shallow pit or circle of stones. Such structures have been excavated in sites dating from the Palaeolithic onwards and can be found in caves, open campsites and early buildings.

Among the frequent findings in the settlements of the early Middle Ages in South-West Slovakia belong different types of heating devices. Different types are often found together and this means that it is necessary to assess them in mutual correlation. A more detailed understanding of their function and development is a contribution to the elucidation of the way of life of the medieval people. The important number of findings allows us to trace the changes from the 6 th to the 13 th centuries.
Each of these two groups can be further divided according to the construction, function and position inside or outside the object or within the settlement. The positioning of a heating device in a settlement object was conditioned by its function and also, to a large extent, by tradition. Here the comparison with ethnographical data of Slovakia provides important hints.
These are situated either directly inside the dwellings or outside them.

Dated Stone Fireplace
The palaeomagnetic directions of seven Dutch fireplaces are compared with the archaeological age estimates which range from the first to the 17 th century AD. A comparison with the British master curve of secular variation for archaeomagnetic dating results in a refinement of the archaeological age estimates in two cases, while four other archaeological age estimates can be confirmed.
For one fireplace only one sample is reliable, resulting in a very poorly defined archaeomagnetic age of 2 to 3 centuries younger than the expected age i. On the other hand, accepting the archaeological age estimates, the palaeomagnetic directions can contribute to the database that is used to construct the British secular-variation master curve.

For centuries, the hearth was such an integral part of a home , usually its central and most important feature, that the concept has been generalized to refer to a homeplace or household, as in the terms “hearth and home” and “keep the home fires burning”. In a medieval hall , the hearth commonly stood in the middle of the hall, with the smoke rising through the room to a smoke hole in the roof.
Later, the hearth was moved to the side of the room and provided with a chimney.
